March 16, 2010: 'Night of the Hunter', 'Dawn of the Dead', Elvis, and more in New Jersey

My favorite place to see a movie in Jersey is the phenomenal Landmark Loews in Jersey City, and this season the vintage movie palace is paying monthly tributes to specific decades in cinema history. Ever since I became aware of this I've been doing a little tribal Charles Laughton dance in the hopes that their '50s month would include a screening of the actor's sole directorial effort. All of that shaking and shimmying has paid off, because the Loews will be playing Night of the Hunter on Friday, March 26! Often considered a horror movie, but more of a nightmarish Southern Gothic fairy tale, Charles Laughton's film was a major flop when it was released in 1955, but it is now regarded as a groundbreaking classic due to stellar performances from a terrifying Robert Mitchum and a stalwart Lillian Gish, Mitchum's famed "left hand/right hand" speech, and Laughton's stunningly dreamy visuals.

Along with the greatness of Hunter, this screening is well worth attending for the beauty of the Loews and the can't-be-beat admission, which is, like, five bucks or something. Horror fans may also want to check in at the Loews this weekend for the "Saturday Nightmares" horror convention, which will feature screenings of Dawn of the Dead and Creepshow along with a panel discussion by George Romero, Ken Foree, Tom Savini, Adrienne Barbeau, and others! Those who check in on Psychobabble for the latest Rock & Roll info might be more interested in the screening of King Creole starring Elvis Presley, which will be showing on March 27.

Information about all these groovy events can be found at the Landmark Loews' official site. Here's to hoping that this April's '60s-cinema schedule will include screenings of Yellow Submarine and 2001: A Space Odyssey. I'm gonna get started on my tribal Ringo Starr/Stanley Kubrick dance right now...
