Today is the 45th anniversary of “You Really Got Me”, a revolutionary single that not only made the Kinks’ career (sorry… kareer) but also pioneered heavy metal, power-chord rock, heavy guitar distortion, and probably half-a-million other good things. In celebration of this milestone, I bring you…

Aside from Ray and Dave Davies, the most enduring (and long suffering) member of the Kinks was one Michael Charles Avory. From 1964 to 1984, Avory sat quietly behind the kit banging out rock-solid, Charlie Watts-style beats. Mick’s similarity to Watts is somewhat appropriate considering that he briefly sat in with the Rolling Stones before they played their first gig in the summer of ’62. Good-natured, working class Avory was not hired by the artists-formerly-known-as-the-Ravens until January of ’64, and as was often the case at the time, he did not play on the Kinks’ first few records...

Pretty cool article, seems like you could try and make a whole other list from a-z of the kinks…
Do you collect the kinks at all? Have you seen ray, dave, the kast offs or the band live yourself?

I’m a bit of a non-obsessive Kinks collector. My most valued bits are a full set of the Golden Hour L.P.’s from the early ‘70s. They aren’t necessarily worth much money, but I adore those old compilations, particularly the third volume, which gathers songs from their greatest period (Face to Face through Percy). I’ve seen neither Dave nor the Kast Offs, but I did see Ray during his original “Story Teller” tour when he was reading from the newly published X-Ray. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

Great article! I never knew about the Tom Robinson Ray spat. Prince of the Punks now has a new light shed on it.Rays brilliant and so glad we still have him making great music.

Nice entry ... not sure how Kinks “kultists” missed it before now.

Have you seen “Percy”? I bought it online a while back and never thought it was particularly hard to find, but I could be wrong.

BTW, Charlie’s band in “Lost” is called “DriveShaft.” He actually sang the Kinks song “He’s Evil” on the show.

I must admit that I have not seen Percy, although I should rectify that immediately, and I completely missed the “He’s Evil” performance on “Lost”. Apparently, The Kinks’ version is also playing in the background in Charlie’s brothers’ apartment on the “Fire + Water” episode. Nice catch on that one, Chris.

Good stuff about The Kinks my all time favorite British band who was able to see live more than 30 times Ray is my favorite song writer as well God Bless The Kink’s
